UK
Free shop take-back
Key facts
The campaign is run by Material Focus, a not-for-profit funded under the UK's electrical waste rules.
When you buy a new electrical item, the shop must offer a free way to recycle your old one of the same type. Many take it back in store.
Smaller shops and online sellers can pay into a scheme that funds council tips instead. They then send you to a tip.
Shops that take items back in store must give you at least 28 days to bring the old one in. It does not matter where you bought it.
Large shops must also take very small electricals, under 25cm on the longest side, even if you buy nothing.
That rule applies where the shop's electrical sales area is over 400 square metres.
Recycle Your Electricals says more than 22,000 shops take part in shop take-back.
