Anything with a plug, a battery or a cable should not go in your household rubbish. Take it to a tip or an electrical drop-off, or back to a shop.
Binmap lists 436 places that take electricals: 233 tips, 123 electrical drop-off points and 80 charity shops.
The charities with the most places on Binmap that take electricals are British Heart Foundation (153), British Red Cross (17) and Sue Ryder (3).
When you buy a new electrical item, the shop must offer a free way to recycle your old one if it does the same job. Many shops take it back in store.
Smaller shops and online sellers can pay into a scheme that funds council tips instead. They then send you to a tip.
Shops with more than 400 square metres of space for electricals should also take small items under 25cm for free, even if you buy nothing.
Some charity shops take working electricals to sell. Wipe your data from phones, laptops and tablets first.
