How to get rid of extra household rubbish

Most household rubbish can go in your council bins. What they will not take can go to a tip, a council special collection or a registered waste firm.

Tips

Take it to your local tip. Your council's website lists them.

Council special collection

Councils collect large items such as sofas and fridges, usually for a fee.

A private waste firm

A skip firm or clearance firm must be on the register of waste carriers as an upper tier carrier. A charity collecting items must be on it as a lower tier carrier.

Your rubbish is your responsibility

GOV.UK says you must check that anyone you give household waste to is legally allowed to take it. If it is fly tipped, you could be fined.

Key facts

  • Binmap lists 133 places that say they take general household waste, including 119 tips.
  • Another 401 places may take general household waste, but they do not say so. Check before you go.
