How to dispose of asbestos

Asbestos cannot be reused or recycled. Contact your council for advice before you move it, or find a hazardous waste service on GOV.UK if you live in England or Wales.

Leave asbestos whole and wrap it twice

The Health and Safety Executive says asbestos fibres can cause fatal lung disease. About 5,000 people a year die from asbestos related diseases in Great Britain. HSE advises keeping large pieces of asbestos waste whole, then double wrapping and labelling them.

Your council

Contact your council for advice first. In England and Wales, GOV.UK finds your council hazardous waste service from your postcode.

A registered waste carrier

If you cannot take it yourself, use a registered waste carrier and a licensed disposal site.
